Onychomycosis due to yeast Trichosporon mucoides |
|
Trichosporon is a soil and water living yeast that can contaminate humans skin and in the most cases, to be harmless to healthy people or is known to cause a wide range of superficial skin and nail infections. However, it may be dangerous to people with suppressed immune systems, such as those undergoing cancer treatments. Trichosporonosis in immunocompromised patients (neutropenic patients with acute leukemia, after bone marrow transplantation, haematological malignancy, premature newborns) may be a cause of severe lethal opportunistic infection. |
